The Paterson Street Hub shared the Beanie Love with Tanya Hattingh from the Alice Springs Beanie Festival leading workshops at the Barkly Regional Arts, Tennant Creek Primary School and the Hub itself, in May. Most beanies were created using needle point felting, allowing beginners to create a work of art in a relatively short time period.

The theme for 2022 was ‘Stitching Hearts ‘and beanie makers were encouraged to depict scenes that made their heart happy.

The results included Barkly landscapes complete with troopies, a trip to Central Servo for a Slurpie, unicorns, Transformers, family, friends, camping, fast cars and of course football!

After a week of frantic stabbing (into felt), and expert assembly, mostly done by Tanya, the 30-odd resulting beanies were transported to Alice and displayed in the Araluen Art Centre Gallery as part of the Beanie Festival.

Tennant Creek Beanies took out the Kids Special Mention – The Giant Slurpie, as well as the Kids Section Trophy – Family and Things that Make your Heart Sing – Footy Game.

The Beanies remained on display for most of July and were seen by hundreds of people from all around the world.

Congratulations to all our talented beanie makers and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s workshops.

Tanya recently revisited Tennant Creek we took the opportunity to congratulate Tennant Creek Primary School beanie champions on their success.
