Allora Golf Course celebrates 25th anniversary

The current Allora Golf Course will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year, with a golf day and BBQ planned for Sunday 2nd October. We say “current” because this golf course is actually the third one in Allora. The first Allora Golf Club was formed in June 1927 and the course opened in August 1927.

Junior golfers take on Narrandera course

It was a beautiful winter’s day when Narrandera Golf Club hosted Juniors on the Move on Sunday August 21, with bright sunshine and no wind.

Warren Brewer and Michelle Field have made it back-to-back wins in the Goodline Weipa Open after triumphing in the men’s and women’s divisions on the weekend.

Tatt and Spitty 2022 Golfanza Champions

Again, a successful northern Victorian Triple Golfanza held at Cohuna on Saturday, Barham on Sunday and Kerang on Monday, over the Labour Day long weekend. This was the 49th edition of the Triple Golfanza with plans for a big 50th anniversary next year. All the courses were in great shape and near capacity fields at each venue with 133 at Cohuna, 160 at Barham and 130 at Kerang.

Cohuna to world stage

As the Cohuna Golf Club prepares for the Stuart Appleby Pro-Am next week, we talked with home grown hero, Stuart Appleby, about his journey from local Cohuna lad to household name and international golfing legend. It was when his parents took up golf that Stuart Appleby was introduced to the game. As a 14-year-old, he played cricket and football, but it was golf that caught his eye and stole his heart.

“Magic” Johnson on top in Maclean Saturday golf

Miles James. Grade B Grade Maclean golf on Saturday, David Lorenzo showed his steady progress with a very good forty points take second place by just one shot from another improver Geoff Willis. Neither of these consistent scoring golfers could be prepared for the hurricane behind them. After a steady 17 points on the first nine holes and a no score on the tenth, Tracy Johnson breezed through the final eight holes scoring a nett birdie 3 points on every hole.

Lockdown inspires Yamba golfers (sometimes)

David Miles. Playing under lockdown rules is seeing some excellent scores at Yamba Golf & Country Club. The Thursday Stableford saw 151 golfers compete and with many handicaps reduced in the great conditions.

Golf pros teaching beginners for free

Golf took off during the pandemic. Casino Golf Club manager Andrew Porter said the social distancing aspects of the game made it one of the few sports people could play during covid. And a club like Casino was affordable, he said.

Lord Howe Golf Open 2021

For the first time, the Golf Open was held as a stableford event and took place in the first week of May. The course was looking perfect due to many volunteer hours and some great work by “Hairy” - ‘on loan’ from the LHI Bowling Club.

Yamba ladies golf deferred match dates

Leigh Robertson. Despite the onslaught of rain and resulting flooded fairways over the past week, our course is in great condition. Once again, our greens staff have worked hard to help the course recover so competitions and social play can go ahead.

Local tribute to merchant marine

A special tribute to merchant marine has been gaining plenty of attention in its off-beat location. You can find it at the 7th tee at Carpentaria Golf Club in Weipa. Erected by team members from Smit Lamnalco, the anchor in the garden bed is a tribute “to honour the Australian Merchant Navy who sailed in all wars, past, present and future”.
