Shocks are a sudden and dramatic loss in food production and can impact food security, as well as local industries and livelihoods.

Kick in the guts

Yorke Peninsula commercial fishers say they are being discriminated against by a new fees regime that took effect this month, which has been described as a "kick in the guts" that could send them out of business. The fees are based on a quota system aimed at making fishers pay the full cost of government management for King George whiting, garfish and calamari, in Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf only.
Murray crays released
150 Murray crayfish were released in Barham on Friday after many of the iconic species were relocated during the 2022 and early 2023 blackwater events. During the flood event, blackwater poured out of forests that had already had long periods of inundation with environmental water, contributing to poor water quality within the river system.
Fish friends improve local waterways
These plantings are held each autumn and assist in bushfire recovery, bank stabilisation and improved water quality for us all. New ‘fish hotels’ to boost climate resilience in Harvey River: McGurk, Whitby
Nine 'fish hotels' will form prime real estate through a 500-metre section of the river near Riverdale Road - an area that was historically de-snagged to increase drainage. The fish hotels, looking like small wooden pyramids, will sit on the riverbed and serve as a perfect location to attract and retain aquatic wildlife ... The purpose built 'hotels' have been constructed by Waroona Men's Shed and students from the Western Australian College of Agriculture in Harvey using locally sourced timber.
10 million reasons to love fishing in Victoria
The State Government’s record-breaking fish stocking program has again hit a high-water mark with 10 million fish stocked this year, so more recreational fishers can wet a line close to home across the state. Two Rocks, Butler and Kinross men caught illegally fishing for marron
A Two Rocks man has been fined more than $11,000 and has been prohibited from having a recreational marron fishing licence or possessing marron or marron fishing gear for three years, after being charged for illegal fishing offences last year. The 33-year-old man was caught during a joint overnight patrol by DPIRD fisheries officers and WA Police, three weeks after the 2023 marron season closed.
Ocean users cautioned
Ocean users in the South-East have been asked to exercise extra caution following the spread of abalone viral ganglioneuritis (AVG) in South Australian waters for the first time. The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) said AVG has been confirmed in wild abalone in waters south of Port MacDonnell, and restrictions are now in place from the Southend to the South Australian-Victorian border in the east.

393 fish were caught during the Moulamein Football Netball Club’s annual fishing competition. ... This year's event saw entrants become citizen scientists, forming a partnership with Dr Nathan Miles from NSW Fisheries at Narrandera to record vital fish data to monitor fish numbers between the Balpool Bridge and 19-mile reserve on the Edward River at Moulamein.
