City of Coffs Harbour, Media Release, 13 July 2026

The City of Coffs Harbour’s Council Chambers is no stranger to a contest of words, but the verbal theatrics will go next level when it hosts the local heat of the 2026 Australian Poetry Slam.

Unscripted and uncut, this popular live event (with language and themes which may not be suitable for young ears) is set to rattle the house in the River Oak Room at Yarrila Place on 11 August.

This is a free event for audience and performers, whether they are seasoned campaigners or raw beginners keen for a crack at the microphone.

To hone their skills before the big night, Miles Merrill – an American who introduced poetry slam to Australia – will lead a coaching workshop the day before.

With the top two from the Coffs heat progressing to the NSW State Finals, competition will be spirited.

“Expecting the unexpected is a given at the Australian Poetry Slam and that’s the beauty of the concept,” Mayor Nikki Williams said.

“This will be the 14th time Coffs has hosted a heat of the national competition and every year there’s been some extraordinary presentations.”

The Australian Poetry Slam (APS) is a dynamic performance poetry event which celebrates the power of spoken word.

Since its inception in 2005, the APS has become a platform for poets of all ages and backgrounds to share their stories, connect with audiences, and showcase their talents.

Coffs Harbour Libraries in partnership with Word Travels will host the pre-heat workshop from 5.30-7.30pm on Monday 10 August in the Learning Lab on Level 2 of Yarrila Place.

This will be led by Merrill an acclaimed writer, performer, facilitator and event coordinator who combines poetry with theatre, experimental audio, hip-hop beats, stand-up and, occasionally, political confrontation.

Cost of the workshop is $5 and registration is essential

“Most poetry slams are all ages but some performances may include strong language and adult themes so discretion is advised,” City Libraries Service Leader Karen Rowe-Nurse said.

“The Coffs Harbour heat is always a winner with audiences, as some get right into the spirit of the night by holding up scorecards after each performance.

“Above all, everyone is welcome to have a go – from first-timers to seasoned poets, as this is an opportunity to compete in a safe and encouraging environment.”

Each artist will have just two minutes on the mic, and the crowd will determine who goes through to the State Final.
