Braidwood and District Heavy Horse Association, Media Release, 24 April 2026
The Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show 2026 is back into town, and this year it’s bringing more horsepower than ever. The Alma Cup with a cash prize of $1000 courtesy of the Community Bank Braidwood is sure to be hotly contested.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of one of regional NSW’s most historic towns, the 2026 show promises a full day of gentle giants, proud traditions, and the occasional moment where a 900-kilo horse decides it knows better than its handler.
Visitors can expect:
- Magnificent Clydesdales, Shires, Percherons and other heavy breeds strutting their stuff
- Harness and cart displays that prove slow and steady doesn’t just win the race — it steals the show
- Skill at Arms- a military practice for mounted warriors using weapons such as the bow and arrow, spear, sword and lance.
- Riding with Sticks – demonstration of horseback archery.
- Plenty of family-friendly entertainment, local stalls, and opportunities to get up close to these incredible animals
Event organisers say the show is not just about admiring beautiful horses — it’s about celebrating a living connection to the region’s agricultural heritage.
“These horses helped shape communities like Braidwood,” President Cai Thomas said. “They pulled ploughs, carts, and probably a few stubborn farmers along the way. Today, they remind us of where we’ve come from — and they do it with style.”
And for those wondering – yes, there will be ribbons, yes, there will be proud owners polishing already immaculate harnesses, and yes, there’s always at least one horse who refuses to cooperate at exactly the wrong moment. It’s tradition.
Whether you’re a lifelong horse enthusiast, a curious visitor, or just someone who appreciates animals with truly excellent hair, the Braidwood & District Heavy Horse Show is a must-see event.
So come along, bring the family, and experience a day where the pace is slower, the smiles are wider, and the horsepower is very, very real.
