The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is urging everyday people across the Basin to speak up as public consultation for the Basin Plan Review reaches its halfway mark.
Hundreds of conversations have already taken place in towns and communities across the Basin, and councils, community groups and industry bodies are well underway with their submissions. MDBA Chief Executive Andrew McConville said now is the time for individual community members to add their perspectives.
“Local voices matter. Whether you live on a farm, in a regional town or city, or anywhere along the rivers, your experience helps us understand what’s really happening on the ground,” Mr McConville said.
“Your local knowledge is incredibly valuable, often more than you realise.”
More than 2.4 million people live within the Murray–Darling Basin, and the MDBA wants to hear from as many of those people as possible.
Mr McConville said a healthy Basin means resilient ecosystems, stronger industries, thriving communities and opportunities for future generations.
“That’s why a Plan for the Basin matters – it’s how we protect what we value and ensure rivers remain healthy, for generations to come.”
Mr McConville said people often think their view will not make a difference, but every submission contributes to building a clearer picture of community perspectives.
He said submissions don’t need to be long, technical or cover every issue raised in the Discussion Paper which was released on 5 February 2026.
“You don’t need to be an expert to make a submission.”
“You can simply tell us what’s important to you, your family or your community. If there’s just one aspect you care about, you can focus on that.”
“Your feedback will assist the Authority in making recommendations on how the Basin Plan and Basin water management can be improved.”
