The Hon. Robyn Cahill, Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations (NT), Media Release, 23 June 2025
As part of the Finocchiaro CLP Government’s Rebuilding the Economy: NT Economy Strategy 2025, Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill will lead a delegation to Malaysia to strengthen government-to-government ties and promote new trade and investment opportunities for the Northern Territory.
Minister Cahill said the Northern Territory has strong business and cultural connections with Malaysia, and the delegation will explore opportunities for bilateral trade and investment across workforce, education, agribusiness and energy.
“The Northern Territory is a reliable partner for energy collaboration, sustainable agriculture and skills development and increasing two-way trade with Malaysia will help grow the Territory’s economy.”
“Building stronger relationships with our Asian neighbours is part of the CLP Government’s plan to rebuild the economy and make the Northern Territory the best place in Australia to do business.”
“The Northern Territory and Malaysia share many similarities in that we are both rich in natural resources, are focused on building diverse and resilient skilled workforces, and committed to economic transformation.
“As part of our year of action, certainty and security, we will continue to collaborate to unlock new trade and investment opportunities and realise the full economic potential across priority sectors in both the Northern Territory and Malaysia,” said Ms Cahill.
This visit presents an opportunity to strengthen cooperation in workforce development and share expertise in training for the energy, infrastructure, and agri-industrial sectors.
International education is also a focus, with plans to deepen engagement with Malaysian education agents and institutions to attract more Malaysian students to study and train in the Northern Territory.
With connectivity between the Northern Territory and Asia set to increase with a new AirAsia Malaysia non-stop service between Kuala Lumpur and Darwin, commencing on 27 June 2025, now is an ideal time to forge deeper connections and boost interest in living, working, and studying in the Territory.
This new direct service to Malaysia provides a low-cost option for Territorians to travel to a major Southeast Asia Hub and enhance business, trade and education partnerships in the region.
The estimated total cost for the Minister and an adviser is approximately $13,000. Final costs will be reported following the trip, in line with standard reporting processes.
