Ten years ago, the Nimbin community came together to ensure the continued growth of an organic, sustainable food culture.
At the time, the only local focal point for organics was at the Blue Knob Saturday market, and as the family-run Nimbin Organic Foods was looking to move on after a generation in Nimbin, they took the opportunity to support the concept of a co-operative taking over.
So, with the financial support of the community and the hard work of a legion of volunteers, despite some tough times getting things up and running, the Nimbin Organic Food Co-op has grown to supply the local need and has become a thriving business.
But that’s not all it is. Aside from ensuring support for the local growing community, the co-op has inspired, educated and provided social opportunities to a whole generation of volunteers.
With current ranks numbering more than 50, many have been involved from the very beginning.
Community organisations such as the Nimbin Organic Food Co-op contribute to the bonds that enable a community to thrive.
You can support the co-op with an annual membership, or pop in and pick up a volunteer application form.
