Nhill Show

Recent stories

What a remarkable day the 138th annual Nhill Show turned out to be on Thursday, October 17, 2024. Initially, the weather posed a concern for the organising committee; however, it ultimately contributed to settling the dust and enhancing the overall enjoyment of the event. By 10a.m., all trade sites, food vendors, and amusements in Sideshow Alley were fully prepared, while the shearing and equestrian events were already underway.

This year, the show featured over 2,200 entries, encompassing a diverse range of categories, including art, crafts, photography, cooking, LEGO, metalwork, wool, grains, shearing, and horses; this was a significant increase from 2023. The Home Industries and Freeman Pavilion were adorned with a stunning array of flowers, culinary creations, crafts, and artwork. Notably, there was a rise in entries for grain, fodder, and wool, indicating a need for a larger space in 2025. Two special sections introduced for 2024 included Pounded Flower Art Bunting Flag and painted skateboards, both of which attracted a commendable number of entries. Additionally, participation in the Men’s Only section and the Aged Care Section also saw an encouraging increase.

The trade site area was teeming with agricultural offerings, thanks to the generous support of local and regional businesses.

The show was officially opened by David Jochinke.

The winners of the Show Patron Competition were: 2-year old to kinder boys Hunter-Alexander, girls 2-year-old to kinder– Eloise Albrecht. Prep to Year 2 Girls – Hannah Gladdis, Boys; Connor Borgelt. Year 3 to Year 6; Boys: Darcy Borgelt Girls. Year 3–6 Lexie Rethus and Young Casual Teenager – Trinity Rethus.

The grand parade proved to be a resounding success, featuring the 2024 Junior Ambassador winner, Alissa Trenery, alongside 2023 winner Bailee White, who proudly carried the banner. The event also showcased the junior show patron competition winners.

Local student participants, entrants in the “Dress Up as Poultry” competition, the Luv-a-Duck mascot, Ford vehicles, vintage machinery, emergency service vehicles, and additional vehicles from the trade site area.

The day concluded with an evening performance by the Austins, complemented by a magnificent fireworks display.

Secretary Julie Woolcock said, ” The committee extends its heartfelt gratitude to the gate volunteers, stewards, judges, prize donors, advertisers, Hindmarsh Equestrian Club, exhibit entrants, Errol Laverty, trade site holders, the Zanker family, Lyn Fisher, Wayne & Julie Richards, Nhill Vintage Club, shearing volunteers and any other group and individual who has contributed. We would like to express our profound appreciation to all our sponsors, particularly Campbell Silos, Westvic Spares, Ahrens Group, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Aussie Water Bores, Nhill Silos, and Luv-a-Duck. Their ongoing support has been instrumental in making this event a success.”

The highest gratitude is extended to our President, Darrell Hall, and to all committee members who have dedicated an extraordinary number of volunteer hours throughout the year in preparation for the show. The Nhill Show is fundamentally for the community; therefore, we welcome any suggestions or ideas you may have. Please reach out to a committee member, as we aim to provide what the community desires rather than what we assume you want.
