Bomb disposal unit flown to Hay
Sturt Highway near Hay was closed on Monday afternoon and an exclusion zone established in both directions while police awaited the arrival of the Rescue Bomb Disposal Unit.
The devices found in a vehicle travelling in a westerly directions, two homemade pipe bombs, were dismantled by the Disposal Unit at the scene.
Two men, aged 33 and 30 were arrested and taken to Hay Police Station.
The 33-year-old man was charged with two counts of possess explosive in public place, two counts of possess prohibited drug and custody of knife in public place.
He was refused bail to appear before Griffith Local Court yesterday.
The 30-year-old man was released without charge pending further investigations.
The vehicle was stopped by police for random breath testing.
Another ATV fatality claims a young life
Another ATV-related fatality has rocked the Hay district.
Officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District were called to a property on Maude Road on Friday afternoon, following reports of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash.
Police said a 32-year-old man had been thrown from the ATV.
He was treated on the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died after arriving at hospital.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
It is believed the victim was a visitor to the area.
A man has died following a single-vehicle crash in the state’s south yesterday.
Six months earlier, on Good Friday, a 54-year-old visitor to the district died at the scene near Booligal in an ATV crash after reportedly swerving to avoid colliding with a kangaroo at around 8pm.
Hits kangaroo, ends in gaol
Hitting a kangaroo on the Sturt Highway near Hay last Friday caused a bigger headache for the driver than just a bump to his vehicle.
Police were called to the site around 1pm after the car hit the kangaroo, and following inquiries, searched the vehicle where they allegedly discovering more than 44kg of cannabis leaf in the boot of the car.
The 30-year-old man was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station where he was charged with supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity).
The accused appeared before Wagga Wagga Local Court on Saturday and was formally refused bail to appear before Griffith Local Court today on Monday.
