The Hon. Courtney Houssos, Minister for Finance, Minister for Domestic Manufacturing and Government Procurement, Minister for Natural Resources (NSW), Media Release, 7 May 2026

The Liberals and Nationals last night voted to repeal the state’s ban on uranium mining and nuclear energy.

All Liberal and Nationals members of the Legislative Council voted in favour of John Ruddick’s Uranium Mining and Nuclear Facilities (Prohibitions) Repeal Bill 2025.

It will now go to the Legislative Assembly where it will be opposed by Minns Labor Government, as it was in the Legislative Council.

NSW Labor has a long-standing position opposing uranium mining in this state and that has not changed.

What families need is energy security – that’s what we are delivering.

We’re delivering progress on renewable energy and working to secure new supply of gas by opening up new areas for exploration in the state’s Far West.

The Liberals and Nationals need to be clear with the people of NSW about what they stand for.

Is it nuclear power, which is untested, uncosted, and will take decades to deliver?

Or is it renewables backed by gas – proven, well-developed technologies which are already in use.

The Minns Labor Government has a clear plan. We are delivering measured, responsible policies which support long-term investment and certainty.

The Liberals and Nationals are all over the place.
