The Toowoomba Region Koala Habitat Project has put the call out for local landholders interested in bringing koalas back to their properties.
Project ecologist Shannon Michael said the project supports landholders right across the Toowoomba Region who want to plant koala trees to restore original habitat on their properties.
“Many cattle farmers are planting trees for shade for their livestock and making those trees species that local koalas like to graze on,” Mr Michael said.
The Project is presently taking orders from landholders wanting to receive free eucalypt tubestock, guards, stakes and mulch along with free planting advice and support.
“We already have a couple of Preston landholders planning spring plantings and we’d like to support other landholders in that district or surrounding areas.” Mr Michael said.
In addition to planting advice, the Project is undertaking free thermal drone surveys to confirm local koala populations and help landholders decide where to plant.
The Toowoomba Region Koala Habitat Project is supported by the Commonwealth Government under the Saving Koala Fund.
Landholders wanting to consider koala tree plantings should register their interest at toowoombakoalaproject.org
