Maldon Rose apple tea cake wins at Harcourt Applefest

Recent stories

The Harcourt Applefest sets out to showcase local produce – in particular, with a name like Applefest (drum roll)… yes, apples.

At the recent Applefest, one of Maldon’s-own was also showcased. Grace from Maldon Rose said there was a baking category. “This was our third year in a row that we have entered, and we’ve tried different cakes and different treats as well. On our regular menu, we have a poached pear tea cake. So, I was like, this year I’m going to try to make the poach pear, but I’ll make it with Harcourt apples. And I used a little bit of different seasoning and things.” Grace wasn’t tempted to reveal the ‘little bit of different seasonings and things’. And no wonder, because their Gluten-free Poached Apple Tea Cake won first place. “It was good. Cool. Really exciting,” said Grace. “I used a different spice blend. So, I feel like that could have been what tipped the award our way. Then again, I think the apples just look different to the pears, and I think they look really nice on the cake.”

The award-winning Gluten-free Poached Apple Tea Cake will be available at Maldon Rose over Easter. You’ll also find Grace there – maybe you’ll have more luck tempting her to reveal the ‘little bit of different seasonings and things’.

On Monday before the Easter Parade, Maldon Rose will have tables set up with cakes and slices to take away, along with teas and coffees. “Because of the Easter Parade, it’s a busy day, so we don’t offer table service, only takeaway items. The Bake Sale features retro cake slices and other retro-baked goods. It is a popular event for people to grab a treat while watching the parade,” said Grace.
