Marching in Maldon’s 2024 Anzac Day parade, wearing his great-grandfather’s medals, was William Govier.
William’s step great-grandfather was Richard (Dick) Cox, who served with great bravery in the army in New Guinea in World War II.
According to William’s dad Jason Govier, Dick was a humble and polite man who rarely spoke of his war service. Towards the end of his life, however, he began to open up a little about the mud, malaria and bloody battles that were part of a soldier’s lot when fighting in New Guinea in WWII.
Anzac Day was a time to quietly honour and commemorate the sacrifice that servicemen and women made for their country. Lest we forget.
