How’s ya mate in Wilcannia

Recent stories

Perth born Kirby Bentley, former player for the Fremantle and Carlton clubs in the AFL women’s comp, visited Wilcannia Central School on Thursday 22nd Feb., to socialise and throw a few balls with the students from both schools. Sponsored by Lifeline through a Regional NSW grant, Kirby’s aim was to promote “How’s Ya Mate?”, mental first aid for kids.

A couple of local Police, the Drop in Centre staff and a few parents joined in the basketball games and general goal throwing practice.

Speaking between games Kirby said this type of interaction with younger people is her passion, finding those struggling may not be able to put their worries into words, but their body language tells the story.

Kirby said this is most noticeable with younger children.

The Wilcannia-normal BBQ and salad was served before each child was given a gift bag.

Demonstrating her concern and passion for children’s wellbeing, Kirby drew a smiley face on each child’s hand before they received their bag.

The bags contained a water bottle, sports towel, cap, socks, magnet, jelly beans and a poster.

Most kids also walked away with a new basketball.

Speaking afterwards Jacinta Cullen from Lifeline said the “How’s Ya Mate?” program had been running for some time in Broken Hill with the AFL.

Lifeline are now expanding the program to other sports, including rugby, netball and basketball, working in Wilcannia with the local Regional NSW rep, Regina Hunter.
