Australia Day wash-out, awards to take place at council chambers

Recent stories

Australia Day dawned less than sunny last Friday, and unfortunately for all those looking forward to watching the annual Australia Day Awards being presented and then participating in the fun to follow.

Preparations were well underway when the sky opened up, and unfortunately, due to safety concerns arising from the lightning, Australia Day events were postponed.

The award winners do not have to wait long as the presentation has been rescheduled for today at 10am at the Council Chambers, and the community is invited to watch nominees and winners receive recognition for their efforts in our wonderful community. The Tennant Times contacted Barkly Regional Council to enquire why there was no inclement weather plan.

CEO Ian Bodill replied there was, but there were electrical issues at the Tennant Creek Youth Centre on the day.

The Australia Day Council NT funded Barkly Regional Council to the tune of $30,000 for the Australia Day festivities, which included celebrations in Elliott.

The Tennant Times did not receive a response when we asked if a Family Fun Day for the community would be held at a later date.

Congratulations to the 2024 winners:

Senior Citizen of the Year: Ross Jakamarra Williams

Young Citizen of the Year: Jamie Jones
