WA Police say gun fired while officers at Butler incident

Recent stories

Two men were taken into custody after reports of shots being fired near a home on Marchwood Blvd in Butler earlier this morning.

WA Police responded to the information about 9am with multiple police units attending and just before 10am, one man was taken into custody.

At a press conference this afternoon Inspector Geoff DeSanges said officers were still at the premises when a firearm was discharged from inside the house.

The officers retreated and called for assistance – subsequent negotiations by the TRG and other officers resulted in the second man who had been inside the home leaving the premises without further issue.

Police then entered the premises and located the firearm – a shotgun.

They believe the men involved were known to each other and there had been some sort of altercation between them during which police believe a firearm was discharged prior to police arriving.

At that stage it was not known whether either of the men lived at the premises.

They said there were no injuries and it appeared to have been an isolated incident with no further risk to the community.

Joondalup detectives are still investigating.

During the press conference Inspector DeSanges said any firearm discharged in the community was seriously concerning to the community and to first responders and it could be surmised that the officers attending were in proximity of the firearm being discharged.

Inspector DeSanges said it was a very serious situation and one they would seek to rectify as easily as possible, part of which was removing unlicensed firearms from the streets or weapons that shouldn’t be in the hands of particular individuals with the Firearms Act being reviewed to consider some of those things.
