Golden Plate Awards – judges’ comments

Recent stories

How do our local restaurants, pubs, cafes and wine bars compare to others in regional Victoria? Tourism Victoria has honoured the Golden Plate Awards program as ‘a tool of excellence in industry improvement’. Judging of the Golden Plate Awards is far and wide throughout regional Victoria, but is headquartered right here in Maldon.

Maldon Twilight Dinner Festival Director Pam Jewson runs the Golden Plate Awards program for regional Victoria. But that’s not the only local connection. When Covid saw the withdrawal of Garuda Airlines as major sponsor, Lindsay Callaway from Warral Maldon stepped forward to become not only the major sponsor but also sponsor of the Best Chef regional Victoria.

The highly respected and prestigious Golden Plate Awards are open to all eateries in Regional Victoria sitting outside a 40km zone of Melbourne CBD. Its mission is to help eateries be more competitive by providing independent, expert feedback from the perspective of the consumer.

Judges are hand-selected.

  • Must have food writing experience of more than five years.
  • Must have written food articles for major publications.
  • Must have at least one Chef Hat award.
  • Must have a passion for local food and wine in Regional Victoria.
  • Will help grow the recognition of the regional food scene.

Here is what the judges of the 2023 Golden Plate Awards have to say about some local dining spots in the region.

The Maldon Bakery

“Stepping inside the bakery, you are greeted by the warm aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries, enticing you to indulge in their mouth-watering creations. The skilled bakers meticulously craft each item using traditional techniques and locally sourced ingredients, ensuring the highest standards of taste and authenticity.”

Located in a bustling co-working zone in Castlemaine, this quaint cafe stands out for its commitment to serving only the finest organic coffee. From the moment you step inside, you are greeted by the enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee beans, and the friendly smile of a passionate barista who is eager to craft the perfect cup.”

Five Flags Campbells Creek

“Five Flags is a good old-fashion family pub, whether you’re there daily or just passing through. The team here makes you feel as if you are sitting in your local. The food menu has all the classics as well as some wonderfully prepared contemporary dishes that will appease any foodie.”

Maldon Rose Maldon

“This was my first visit to Maldon Rose and walking in off the bustling footpath felt like I was going to my own private tea party in Alice in Wonderland.”

Harcourt General Store

“Sample some of the delicious homemade cakes and pastries with coffee or enjoy a glass or two of local wine with lunch. Browse the café for fresh eggs, a bunch of flowers, a bottle of wine, beautiful cheese, or a gift for a friend. There is so much on offer and there is a great feeling of community as you support local producers by shopping here.”

The black-tie award night held later this year brings together the who’s who of restaurants, pubs, cafes, and wine bars in regional Victoria.
