Concern over weed spread

Recent stories

Stewart’s Range farmer Heather Heggie is concerned about the rapid spread of weeds throughout the Naracoorte Lucindale Council district.

Addressing Naracoorte Lucindale Council’s February 28 meeting, Ms Heggie also reminded the council it had no engineer.

“My question is in the absence of an engineer, what is the criteria for managing unsealed roads and the potential for weed spread?” Ms Heggie asked.

“I ask this question because a few years ago the Moyhall Road bitumen was ripped up and they were never able to finish bituminising.

“They put down reddish gravel that had too much clay in it. I don’t know if anyone’s got a copy of the data of what happened there (and) if we are learning from past mistakes, or not.”

Ms Heggie was concerned about the storm water through the road surface.

Regarding gravel quarries, Ms Heggie said she had asked council many years ago to ensure gravel from them was weed free to reduce their spread.

“And also (for) council machinery to be kept spotless between roads,” she said.

“And after you do go along and (grade) roads, there is soil disturbance.

“So I suggest you tell the Landscape board so when you’re doing this they’ve got a chance to do a proper spray before or after because I spent four hours yesterday and today (pulling) Innocent weed on Heggies Road.

“We were on top of it there for a while, so that’s what I’m concerned about.”

Mayor Patrick Ross thanked Ms Heggie for her address.

“Those questions will be taken and we will certainly respond to you,” the mayor said.

“And just further to your follow up with the landscape board, I’ll definitely follow up the relationship between the NLC and the landscape board and whether they’re swapping notes in regards to weeds.”
