In time for Discovery Day celebrations, Lord Howe Island received a warm visit from the Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC.

Her Excellency’s three-day program on the Island included meetings with the Lord Howe Island Board, joint emergency services personnel and Marine Parks NSW to learn more about the community and our custodianship.

Along with her husband, Mr Dennis Wilson, the Governor got involved in the fun and games of the Discovery Day evening celebrations at the Oval.

Her Excellency got up close with the Island’s unique biodiversity when inspecting the former woodhen pens and currawong cages that housed these species during the LHI Rodent Eradication Project.

At Stevens Reserve, the group chatted about the booming environmental responses that have been seen since the project, as well as the critical role that biosecurity officers and detection dogs play in monitoring for pests.

Nostalgia was rehashed and shared with the Governor over a cup of tea at North Bay during the LHI Senior Citizen Picnic, which was a special opportunity for some to revisit the beach and Old Gulch for the first time in years.

The Lord Howe Island Central School, Nursery and Lord Howe Island Aquatic Club were also showcased, with Her Excellency meeting local community members and families along the way.
