Dorrobbee Grass Reserve

Recent stories

Dorrobbee Grass Reserve is a beautiful reserve that surrounds the large concrete water tank on the hill just north of Dunoon.

It is a special place of great cultural significance to the traditional custodians, the Widjabul Wia-bal people. The reserve is a traditional Aboriginal camping and travelling route maintained through cultural land-management practices, including cultural burning.

The reserve is also a remnant ‘island’ of fire-dependent grassland and as one of the last intact grassland ecosystems within the Big Scrub bioregion, it holds important ecological value. The reserve has spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and locals have visited and enjoyed the space for many years.

The reserve is managed by a small committee – a ‘Reserve Trust Board’ in the words of Crown Lands – with help from community members and funding through grants.

The main management activities are cultural burning and weed management, which have occurred for a number of years to maintain it as a native grassland.

The committee is always keen to welcome new people from the community to help with managing the grasslands and just to enjoy this treasure in our backyards. The time commitment is low but spending time at Dorrobbee Grasslands is always rewarding.

We have a working bee on the first Sunday of every month, usually starting around 8-8.30am for a couple of hours.
We have a Facebook page if you have any questions, or you can email dorrobbeegrass@gmail.com.

We are planning a Dinner on the Grass on Saturday 3 September as a fundraiser for ongoing activities. Details about the event will be posted on social media in the near future. For more information and bookings: https://www.trybooking. com/CBKJB
