Regional Council of Goyder, Media Release, 9 August 2022

On the 16th of August local, state and international heritage experts will come together at the Burra Town Hall to involve the community in a conversation about Burra’s World Heritage bid.

The panel will include renowned UK world heritage consultant Mr Barry Gamble who will be working with the Regional Council of Goyder, Copper Coast Council and National Trust on a joint World Heritage bid of the Cornish Mining sites in Burra and Moonta.

Barry has over 20 years’ experience in consultancy and developing successful nomination files for the World Heritage List. He is an advisor to several Governments on World Heritage including Great Britain, Japan, Poland and Germany.

Barry prepared the successful World Heritage List proposal for Cornwall. and he was also an advisor on the nominee for the National Heritage Listing of Burra.

Other panellists that will join Barry on the stage include Regional Council of Goyder’s Chief Executive David Stevenson, local historian and resident Meredith Satchell, Andrew Klenke (Director at Swanbury Penglase Architect), Darren Peacock (CEO National Trust SA) and Principal Heritage Conservation Architect from Heritage South Australia, Michael Queale representing ICOMOS and the Burra Charter.

Burra has been recognised as being a nationally significant heritage area as it is only one of two areas in Australia that reflect the successful transplantation of Cornish mining systems to Australia, and the development of mining settlements, that are an important expression of Australian identity and experience.

In July of 2019 Burra completed the Burra Conservation Management Plan (CMP) which provided insights into the past but importantly in providing a plan for the future.

Moonta have similarly completed their Conservation Management Plan and these enabling plans are a key guide for the future of both these very important sites.

The Conservation Management Plan for Burra will be used as a tool to conserve, protect, identify, present, transmit and enhance the National and State Heritage values of the Australian Cornish Mining Sites: Burra, and will be an essential component of the World Heritage bid.

The community event held on the 16th of August will be the start of many opportunities that community will have to hear more about the World heritage journey that Burra is about to undertake and most importantly engage in conversation about what this means for residents, the town itself and the broader Goyder and Mid North region.

Council Chief Executive David Stevenson says “ … this is a once in a life time transformational opportunity for Burra and the region. It is incredibly important we have an open and informative process which put the community first. We want to ensure the whole of our community get the opportunity to be involved and engaged throughout. There is still many years of work ahead of us this is why now is the right time to start the conversation with our community…”
