Investigators are appealing for public assistance after two elderly brothers fought off intruders during an aggravated break and enter in Grafton last week.

Burglar

The men, aged 84 and 87, were asleep inside a Hoof Street residence when an unknown person attempted to gain entry to the premises by removing a flyscreen and climbing through a bedroom window shortly after 4am on February 1.

A struggle ensued with the brothers showing remarkable determination and strength to protect their property, and each other.

The eldest man sustained a laceration to his right arm during the struggle which did not require hospital treatment while his younger brother was uninjured.

During the struggle, it is alleged a second person entered the home, however, no property was stolen.

Officers attached to Coffs Clarence Police District were notified and established a crime scene.

A nearby resident who wished to remain anonymous said they were shocked and horrified to learn a home invasion had occurred so close to their residence.

“I’ve lived here for several years, and it is usually a very quiet and uneventful part of town,” they said.

“I was relieved to hear both men weren’t badly injured, and I think it was very courageous of them to do what they did.”

The resident confirmed they were not home when the incident occurred and are also considering installing a security system.

“There have been a lot of thefts and break-ins across Grafton recently, and I want to do what I can to protect my home and my belongings,” they said.

“I hope the police catch whoever is responsible for breaking into the home in Hoof Street.”

As investigations continue, detectives are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area at the time the offence occurred, to contact Grafton Police on 66 420 222 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
