Waste 2 Art

Outback Arts, Media Release, 7 February 2022

It’s time to turn that trash into treasure! NetWaste, Coonamble Shire Council and Outback Arts are collaborating once again to host the annual Waste 2 Art Competition and Exhibition. This regular event attracts a wide range of artists and is open to all residents in the Coonamble Shire. It engages the imagination and showcases our community’s artistic and creative endeavours using items that are traditionally considered waste.

“After a challenging, yet amazing Regional Exhibition and Competition hosted here in Coonamble last year, we hope that our community was inspired to look at our waste differently. Rubbish can find a second life and our community has proven that time and time again,” said Coonamble Shire Librarian Raquel Pickering.

“Handmade and creative crafting can serve multiple purposes including brightening up your environment but more importantly reducing, reusing and recycling  all those single-use items that clutter our daily lives; and the 2022 theme of Soft Plastics is a great one. Just imagine what you can do with all those grocery bags, takeaway containers and slushie cups!! Don’t forget you can always Google for ideas – turning Waste 2 Art is such a worldwide phenomenon, that there are plenty of pictures and websites for inspiration.”

The Exhibition will be held at the Outback Arts Creative Centre with the support of Outback Arts staff who are themselves, passionate advocates of art and recycling.

If you are stuck for inspiration, the theme for 2022, is soft plastics – however, artworks created using any material normally considered waste are encouraged to be entered. The competition is open to young and old, amateurs and professionals, groups and individuals. Each category carries a financial prize with the winners going onto the Regional Exhibition and Competition. After Coonamble was thrilled to host last years regional exhibition, this year will be hosted by Lithgow City Council.

Outback Art’s Executive Director, Jamie-Lea Trindall has said; “It’s a great opportunity to create something using items that are usually considered waste. We can’t wait to see some incredible imagination and ingenuity in this year’s competition. If you have an idea up your sleeve we’d love to see you enter!”

Entry is free and entry forms can be collected from Coonamble Shire Library, Outback Arts or online at www.outbackarts.com.au
