Club stalwart Steve Graham officially opened Nhill and District Sporting Club’s new grandstand and changeroom facility on Saturday before a full crowd.

The grandstand features 147 seats, including an all-abilities accessible ramp and seating areas, a large media room overlooking the oval, and a corporate room with a sink and storage. There is also an all-abilities car park located at the rear of the building.

The changerooms feature two large areas, each with a shower room including four shower cubicles, three toilets, and a trainer’s room with a small sink.

The new facility also includes split systems throughout, ensuring patrons are comfortable regardless of the season.

Mayor of Hindmarsh Shire Council Ron Ismay said the new grandstand and AFL-compliant changerooms at Davis Park were an impressive addition to Nhill’s sporting complex.

“It was a great honour and privilege to be part of the official opening on Saturday, despite the wet and windy conditions,”Cr Ismay said.

Funding from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program ($760,000), Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Country Football Netball Program ($250,000), Hindmarsh Shire Council ($790,000) and Nhill and District Sporting Club ($100,000) made the project possible.

Cr Ismay also acknowledged former council officer Phil King, now retired, who oversaw many projects across the shire, including the initial concept for the grandstand and AFL-compliant changerooms. He also recognised project manager Simon Landrigan for his commitment to ensuring the project was delivered in a timely manner, Onley’s Holdings for its high-quality construction work, and Dan Colbert and the NDSC committee for providing countless hours of in-kind support. NDSC President Dan Colbert said, “Saturday was a brilliant day and we couldn’t be happier with the result. This grandstand is a historic moment for our club and the community.”

“I am sure this new grandstand will serve the community very well for many generations to come,”Cr Ismay said.

The project was also supported by a number of fundraising efforts by Hindmarsh Shire Council and Nhill and District Sporting Club, including events such as Wimmera Machinery Field Days and Thank Duck It’s Friday. Long-time sponsors DMD’s Brock Quick and Andrew McIlree also presented a cheque for $62,884 towards the project through the auction and donation of a silo, while locals Dean Wheaton, Greig Kennedy, Brett Wheaton and Rob Cole were also acknowledged for their support.

The new facility represents an investment in both the growth of the Tigers and the strength of the community backing the club.

An honour board was also unveiled, recognising community members and long-time supporters of Nhill and District Sporting Club, along with those who contributed to the project.
