Harmony Day

Harmony Day was celebrated in Nhill on Saturday at Jaypex Park, with a number of countries represented through stalls and performances, including the Karen community, Samoan, New Zealand, Karen, Nepalese and Philippino. There were plenty of craft activities, including Samoan Lolly Lai necklace making, Maori Poi making for the Poi dance, pot painting, and free popcorn, all helping celebrate the rich cultural diversity within the shire.

About 150 people attended the event. Hosted by Hindmarsh Shire Council and the Hindmarsh Pride Committee, the day celebrated all cultures as well as LGBTIQ community members within the shire. Councillor Chan Uoy was also in attendance.

Lowan Lodge 107 helped with setting up and packing up for the event, and also took part by selling a sausage sizzle. MC Wanda Queen of the Little Desert kept the performances moving and the crowd entertained throughout the day.

Hindmarsh Pride president Rhys Webb said the event was a success and hoped next year’s celebration would be even bigger.

Harmony Week is an annual celebration that recognises cultural diversity and brings Australians from different backgrounds together.

It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
