Success of Garage Sale Trail

Recent stories

For many households in Southern Downs and across Queensland, Garage Sale Trail conducted last year was a chance to clear out cupboards, make some extra cash and give pre-loved items a second life.

Over two weekends in November 2025, locals sold more than 11,972 items, generating $107,631 for households, community groups and charities, while also diverting items out of landfill.

The annual event, which was made possible by Southern Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Government, gives Australians a simple and fun way to reduce waste, keep items in use and get to know their neighbours.

A new local Impact Report from Garage Sale Trail shows growing participation in secondhand buying and selling as households look for practical ways to save money while reducing waste.

More than 3,700 residents across Southern Downs took part over the two weekends, hosting and visiting garage sales in driveways, streets and community spaces.

Looking across the state, 47,670 people participated, with 112,589 pre-loved items sold and $1 million generated for the Queensland economy.

Together, the local results highlight the social, economic and environmental benefits of reuse in helping households save money, strengthen local connections and keep items out of landfill.

You can register early! Southern Downs residents can now register their interest in the 2026 event, which takes place on 7-8 and 14-15 November at www.garagesaletrail.com.au.
