The Rolls-Royce name is imbued with suggestion and symbolism, not all of which is really to do with cars or mechanicals.
We live in changing times, and the group of Rolls-Royce (and Bentley) owners who visited Maldon on the weekend were just another bunch of car enthusiasts who were happily chatting about bearings and gearboxes in exactly the same way as if they were driving that other British icon, the Morris Minor.
At the end of the day, they are very nice vehicles, and there were around 40 lovely shapes and styles to be seen.
I spoke with Keith Mortimer, the Victorian RR club president who organised the run.
The club holds one of their club meetings each year in a regional centre; last year it was Creswick, and this year it was our little town. They took the steam train to Castlemaine and back after holding their meeting at the Maldon Vintage Machinery & Museum and experienced the best of what we have to offer.
It’s nice to think that Maldon is a destination, whether it be for hearses, Kombis or the humble Rolls Royce.
