Bird watching on Allora Mountain

Recent stories

Did you know that at least 100 different species of birds have been identified within the Allora Mountain Flora and Fauna Reserve?

The Allora Landcare Group maintains a picnic area and a network of walking tracks on top of the mountain, and is pleased to invite members of the community to join a bird watching morning on Sunday the 18th of May, commencing at 8am.

Biologist Frank Coman, the photographer of the birds seen in the book “A Pictorial Guide to the Birds of Allora Flora and Fauna Reserve”, first published in 2020 and republished in 2023, will be present to provide expert commentary and an insight into the birds that live in, or migrate through, the area.

The activity will commence at the picnic area adjacent to the Allora water reservoir. Access is via Burge Road – continue straight ahead past the entrance to the Allora Waste Facility.

The road is rough but accessible by a standard 2WD vehicle. There are some tables and chairs in the picnic area, but it would be advisable to bring your own chairs at least if you want to take the opportunity to enjoy a picnic breakfast or lunch.

There are no toilets or running water – the nearest facilities are at Dalrymple Creek Park.

Following a couple of short presentations by Allora Landcare Group and Frank Coman, there will be an opportunity to hike up the mountain for some bird spotting for those interested. The access tracks are moderately rough so enclosed walking shoes are recommended – and don’t forget the binoculars.

There are some lovely views from the mountain so even if the birds aren’t co-operative it will be an enjoyable walk.
