Aged care residents in the Northern Rivers are benefiting from an innovative initiative called Our Timeless Threads, which merges fashion with caring.
Founded by nurse and fashion designer Maia Willow, this program offers 1950s-inspired shopping experiences within care homes, ensuring that residents can enjoy style and self-expression in a comfortable setting.
“Let’s honour our seniors by helping them reclaim the joys of self-expression,” says Maia. “At Our Timeless Threads, we provide autonomy in choice, confidence, and a sense of being celebrated.”
Maia’s passion for this initiative stems from her experiences as a registered nurse. “Far too often, I witnessed seniors wearing ill-fitting and uncomfortable clothing,” she explains.
“This is a systemic issue; many families lack the time to shop for their loved ones, and many seniors cannot leave the care home for health reasons. My goal is to provide support for those facing moral distress due to these everyday challenges.”
Each pop-up event features a diverse selection of pre-loved clothing, nostalgic props, and music, culminating in a joyful redcarpet experience. Residents are encouraged to touch, try on, and select their attire, restoring their individuality and pride.
For those living with dementia, familiar sights, sounds, and textures can evoke cherished memories, fostering connections and joy.
In a bid to combat fashion waste, Our Timeless Threads collaborates with local op shop Global Ripple. Donated materials are repurposed into stylish clothing protectors and accessories for aged care residents during in-house sewing workshops.
Maia’s mission also aims to tackle Australia’s staggering waste problem, targeting the reduction of approximately 200,000 tonnes of textile waste each year.
Maia is calling on the community to support this important initiative through donations, volunteering, or participation in sewing workshops and fundraising efforts.
In a fast-paced world, Our Timeless Threads aims to restore dignity and compassion to those who have contributed so much to our lives.
