It was an emotional but proud day for the parents of late Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, the Lucindale police officer killed in the line of duty last year.
The late Brevet Sergeant Doig’s mother, Faye Edwards, and her husband Rob were part of the Police Legacy National Wall-to-Wall: Ride for Remembrance memorial service in Lucindale last week.
As part of the Ride for Remembrance, more than 100 current and retired SA Police officers’ rode from Fort Largs to the National Police Memorial in Canberra in honour of fallen colleagues, including Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig.
This year, the riders carried the name of Brevet Sergeant Doig.
Ms Edwards welcomed the Wall-to-Wall riders in an emotional memorial service in Lucindale, saying the family was blown away with so many people riding in honor of their late son.
School kids from Lucindale were also part of the memorial service to show their support and acknowledgement of the late Brevet Sergeant Doig.
South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens was also part of the service in Lucindale.
“Every year, a group of police officers, retired police, and friends of police congregate at the Wall of Remembrance at the Police Academy, and they make their way from there on their motorbikes to Canberra,” Mr Stevens told the media.
“It’s a long trip for them, but it’s to remember those police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
On 16 November 2023, the late Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, along with Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass attended a routine callout just before midnight at a rural property at Senior, near Bordertown.
Brevet Sergeant Doig was shot, courageously fought back, and likely saved the lives of Sgt Hutchinson and Constable Hass.
Sgt Hutchinson was also shot and seriously injured. Hutchinson and Cass stopped the offender, contained the scene, and rendered first aid to Brevet Sergeant Doig who sadly succumbed to his injuries.
He became the first officer killed in over 21 years in South Australia.
