A woman who has thrown her hat into the political ring has vowed to guide a community-led response to deal with crime and social disorder problems that are plaguing Tennant Creek and other communities across the Barkly.
Lizzie Hogan from Borroloola has today been formally announced as the Territory Labor Barkly candidate for the 2024 Territory Election, to be held on 24 August.
Speaking exclusively to the Tennant & District Times, Ms Hogan said she has been a long-term advocate for change and was confident she could make a difference.
“I have put my hand up for this election because I know I can bring people together to turn the tables on the current situation,” she said.
“No-one is okay with the crime and social disorder that we’re seeing in Tennant Creek, Borroloola, Elliott, Ali Curung and other places.
“I feel that there has been a total lack of leadership from the current Member for Barkly Steve Edgington.
“He has had four years to work with people to drive change. But all we have heard is constant whinging and complaining about the Government.
“That’s four wasted years as far as I’m concerned and I don’t believe we have any more time to sit around moaning. It’s time for action, and I’m ready for the challenge.”
Ms Hogan, a Waanyi, Garrawa, Gudanji woman who currently works as a ranger with the Northern Land Council, previously worked at the Mabunji Safe House in Borroloola. She also has a strong record of community service.
“I have lived in several places across the Barkly, I have grown-up 13 children, I have 15 grandchildren and looked after many family members,” Ms Hogan said.
“We all live in the Barkly, this is where we belong and I want it to be a place where we all feel safe, happy and connected.
“I know I have the skills, experience, and drive to bring everyone together, regardless of colour, nationality or race.
“It doesn’t matter where people come from or how different we are. What matters is that we all work as one to create a Barkly that we are proud of.
“The Territory Election that’s coming up is a chance for us all to make a positive difference and I’ll be working hard to be the one to lead the Barkly in a better direction.”
