Darling Downs Independents: A new voice?

Recent stories

With the local government elections looming On Our Selection News presents a media release from a community group called Darling Downs Independents in the interests of political fairness for candidates.

Darling Downs Independents is a dynamic community group dedicated to championing independent candidates for all levels of government in the Darling Downs region, including council, state, and federal elections.

Comprised of passionate local community members with diverse backgrounds ranging from the major parties to minor parties and even voices previously unheard in political circles, Darling Downs Independents represents a fresh approach to governance.

Among its founding members is Robert Baillie, who emphasised the group’s commitment to revitalising political engagement at the local level.

“Across the past few years, people have become disengaged within the political system,” Mr Baillie said.

“Local representatives guide the region forward and ensure that the complex needs of our ever-changing region are being met.

“Our group’s diversity, including locals without prior political involvement, is our greatest strength.

“It shows that our group cares for the wonderful region we live in and aren’t just interested in playing politics.”

In a notable endorsement, Darling Downs Independents have thrown their support behind Kirstie Smolenski as a candidate for the upcoming federal election.

Ms Smolenski expressed gratitude for the group’s backing and stated, “I’m very chuffed to be promoted as an example of integral and community politics.

“I first ran as an independent because I felt passionate about this region, and it’s clear that so many other people share this passion.”

Looking ahead, the group has set its sights on the Toowoomba council election and is actively seeking candidates to support.

With a vision grounded in community-driven decision-making and a commitment to representing the diverse voices of the Darling Downs, Darling Downs Independents aims to usher in a new era of inclusive and effective governance.
