Magnificent mural for Wallaroo

Wallaroo has a new mural in its main street.

The Wallaroo Community Development Association, supported by Copper Coast Council and Kent Newbery, has erected the mural at the site of the former chemist on Owen Terrace.

The work is a reproduction of the piece, Wallaroo 1951, created by internationally recognised artist Jeffrey Smart, and depicts some of the town’s iconic heritage buildings and identities.

WCDA president Andy West said the project was well worth the time and effort it took to complete.

“While it wasn’t possible to completely screen off the blackened ruins (the building was gutted by a fire in December 2021), we have softened its appearance and created something of interest for residents and visitors to the town,” he said.

“It is great to have a mural which depicts the town’s heritage and features two past local identities.

“The artwork highlights the role Wallaroo played in the development of this acclaimed Australian artist.

“The interest shown by the community is strong and will probably lead to our group looking to place more murals around the town.”

Mr West said the support of local businesses and organisations helped bring the project to life.

“We are thankful for the local businesses which have assisted with the project, including Cee Me Roofing, TR Depledge Gardening and Maintenance and the Weeroona Hotel,” he said.

“Thanks must also go to Kent Newbery for giving us permission for the mural to be located on his property, and for contributing to the cost, as well as Copper Coast Council for their support.

“We are also grateful to Stephen Rogers, the archivist for the estate of Jeffrey Smart, for granting us permission for Smart’s art to feature on the mural.”
