The Wimmera Development Association (WDA) and Nhill Learning Centre have partnered for years to deliver homework club support for multicultural students in Nhill. The program is provided for students who may have English as a second or third language, or whose parents do not speak English and cannot support with homework.
Homework Club Coordinator, Nan Da San says that her role has given her enormous insights into the strengths and needs of individuals. She’s also noted that more volunteers are needed to help students reach their full potential.
“The homework club gives that extra bit of support and encouragement to those students who have extra barriers to learning. English language can be a huge barrier for some students. As well as supporting with learning, the homework club is a place to meet other students and build confidence, academically and socially.” Sara Barron, WDA Settlement Services Manager.
The homework club runs weekly at The Patch. Demand for the service has grown and more volunteers are needed to support the students.
Homework club volunteer, Wendy Bywaters, encourages people to get involved:
“My children have grown up and volunteering at homework club is a great way to meet young people and keep in touch with what is happening locally in that age group.
It is so uplifting to see children laughing and happy. The children and the parents are very grateful and it’s nice to know that the time I spend each week is appreciated.
There are many reasons that children need help with reading and spelling after school. Some parents lack the confidence with their children’s homework because their own English is not good.
As a volunteer we listen to reading, help with spelling words and play games. The kids are so smart but sometimes need help with comprehension. I definitely get as much as I give, and highly recommend volunteering at homework club.”
When students were asked what the highlight of Homework Club is, they responded:
“Reading with a volunteer” Pyo Pyo.
“Being able to go outside at The Patch” Jennifer Karen.
Community leader, Thablay Sher, has been involved with the homework club for years. She still volunteers to support the students:
“I think the importance of homework club is giving children a space to practise reading with another adult and helping with assignments. This help might not be available at home. By helping each other we improve our students’ abilities and build the type of communities that people want to live in.”
