Mayor meets with Territory counterparts

Recent stories

Barkly Regional Council Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin met with his Territory counterparts this week at the Local Government Association NT’s (LGANT) annual conference in Alice Springs.

The two-day Sustainable Councils conference was held in Alice Springs and was attended by mayors, presidents, councillors, CEOs and delegates from all 17 local government areas in the Territory.

Mayor McLaughlin was accompanied by BRC’s Acting CEO Russell Anderson and Director of Corporate Services Gillian Molloy.

They attended information sessions and workshops ranging from addressing key sustainability issues facing all LGAs, including employee shortages, financial sustainability to risk management.

At a Local Government Roundtable on the second day, Mayor McLaughlin attended the Local Government Roundtable to talk issues to the Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain, Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians Senator Malarndirri McCarthy and NT Minister for Local Government Chansey Paech.

Mayor McLaughlin said the conference was an opportunity to discuss with other Councils about working on greater remote service delivery.

“It gave us a greater understanding of the issues we face along with other local government areas and an opportunity workshop solutions regarding workplace shortages and talk about sustainable outcomes within local government,” he said.
