Local winery winning hearts at Harvest Festival

Recent stories

A slice of paradise nestled in Welshman’s Reef on Dja Dja Wurrung country is home to magical panoramas and a charming winery that’s perfect for families and their furry friends.

Panacea Estate is a recent addition to the thriving wine industry in the region and celebrated its harvest season with a family-friendly festival over the weekend.

Traditionally a time of celebration, the Harvest Festival at the Panacea Estate Winery was a merry affair that offered grape harvesting and the messy joys of grape stomping.

The curated cheese and charcuterie boards, loaded with a selection of locally sourced cheeses and cured meats, were the perfect addition to the wine-tasting event, while live music from dynamic duo, Terry & Gilly ensured the punters were thoroughly entertained.

Peter Christen became the owner of the vineyard in 2020 during the pandemic.

Despite being new to the industry, Peter took the plunge and is embracing the hands-on nature of the job.

The previous owners, Chapple’s Wine, provided some tutelage when they handed over the winery.

Peter also credits his grape-growing neighbours and the local wine industry for generously sharing their knowledge.

“We’re not competitive about the customer base,” he said.

“We all want to ensure that the area is fairly and squarely on the map as a wine region.”

This supportive approach includes sharing grapes or machinery when required, all with a view to guaranteeing that Central Victoria continues to grow its reputation as a wine-growing region of note.

The festival brought together wine enthusiasts, foodies, families and furry friends alike, providing a fantastic opportunity to learn about the wine-making process while sipping on some of the winery’s delicious offerings.

The fruit is all grown on-site and hand-picked with Shiraz, Semillon, Rosé and Sparkling Pét-Nat wines on the menu.

Peter is excited to introduce new grape varieties in the near future, providing more options for eager admirers and new visitors to try.

As a venue or a day trip, Panacea Estate provides an experience that is not just a wine-tasting affair but a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The winery also offers accommodation and event spaces for weddings and other special occasions.

In choosing to name the winery ‘Panacea’, Peter offers a vision: “Good company, beautiful views, great music, and great wine are surely a cure of all ills.”

Panacea Estate is a heavenly spot that promises to help visitors enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
