At its Ordinary Meeting Southern Downs Regional Council recognised Joan Cronin for her significant contribution and dedication to the region as a volunteer at the Allora Regional Sports Museum.

Through Council’s Recognition of Volunteers program, Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said Joan’s commitment to the museum since it opened in 1998 had gone above and beyond to grow the facility into what it is today.

“Since the museum opened its doors and welcomed its first visitor, Joan has dedicated countless hours volunteering as the usher at the famous Allora Regional Sports Museum without expecting recognition or fanfare,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“Supporting her son and President of the museum Perry Cronin, Joan has been instrumental in making the museum into the internationally recognised facility it is today.

“During events, Joan could always be found quietly standing inside ushering, explaining and spruiking the museum’s exhibitions.

“Joan is a shining example of an ordinary citizen delivering an extraordinary service to the community and I am pleased to recognise her years of selfless service.”

Joan has also been heavily involved within the local rugby league community and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her late husband Leo.

Leo was an international referee and well-regarded in sporting circles, having refereed many local games including TRL Grand Finals and the last Bulimba Cup in 1970.
