Wyreema medical centre in the works

Recent stories

Residents of Wyreema may no longer have to travel out of town to visit a doctor or dentist.

A development application has been submitted to Toowoomba Regional Council to construct a dental and medical practice on the corner of Newman Road and Balfour Street (Toowoomba Karara Road).

Dr Jaideep Singh has applied for a Material Change of Use on the 820m2 site at 1 Newman Road, Wyreema, with the proposed development covering 250.6m2.

The planning report, prepared by Creative Planning Pty Ltd, states that between the dental and medical surgeries there will be six full time equivalent employees and the proposed days and hours of operation are Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm.

There is an estimation that there will be 300 visitors per month, although it is noted that it is too soon to give specifics.

The planning report made an argument as to why the medical facility would benefit the community.

“There is no central business district in Wyreema and no dentists or doctors’ surgeries,” the report said.

“The fact that the proposed development is surrounded by residences means that the dental practice will service these houses,” the planning report said.

“The proposed development will provide a valuable service to the people of Wyreema, as at present the residents have to drive to Drayton or Westbrook for medical attention.”

It should be noted there is also an existing medical practice in Cambooya, which is about the same distance as Westbrook.

Draft plans show the medical practice having three consultation rooms and a treatment room and the dental surgery having four surgery rooms.

The car park has eleven spots for cars, including one disabled, and two for motorbikes.

Entry and exit to the car park for the facility will be via Balfour Street.
