Saucy, country curds on whey to Sydney

Recent stories

A taste of Bonalbo is on its way to a prestigious food show in the city.

Simon and Emma Powick’s tomato relish won first prize at the Bonalbo Show and their lemon curd came second.

They make and sell onion marmalade and beetroot relish as well.

All four products have been entered into the Sydney Food Show.

A jar of relish, curd or marmalade is $6.50 at Powick’s Pantry inside the Bonalbo Memorial Hall.

“We keep the price reasonable, it’s a tight margin,” Simon said.

If and when the Powicks win, the jars can have a show sticker on them.

Simon won gold and silver at the Sydney Food Show years ago with bread from his Mullumbimby bakery.

This time it is Bonalbo’s name that could be a winner in Sydney in September.

Simon has been in the hospitality business for 28 years.

Is there a secret ingredient in his relishes and curd?

Simon laughed. The ingredients are listed on the jar label.

“But I did have a sandwich bar in the UK. I’ve got thousands of relish recipes, “ he said.

Simon is always experimenting with flavours such making a chilli, lime, coconut sauce or creating a new kind of chocolate tart.

His favourite moment in the cafe is when food is served to a group booking, and everyone goes quiet as they eat.

Powick’s Pantry products are sold at the Casino Farmers Market every Saturday.
