Krogh crowned Cups King

Recent stories

A bold move by jockey Quayde Krogh paid dividends when Kiptanui stunned favourite Ready To Humble in Sunday’s $40,000 Narrandera Cup over a mile.

Trained by Mathew Dale, Kiptanui ($12) started from barrier 10 and was forced to sweep around the field early to take up the running, after Nick Olive’s Ready to Humble ($1.75) had bounded out of the gates and struck the early lead.

The contest developed into something of a match race as the duo left the field behind in the early stages.

In the straight the challenges loomed in numbers but none could get past the leading duo, with Kiptanui ultimately drawing clear in the final stages to win by three quarters of a length, with Zidler ($14) a close up third.

For Krogh, the decision to use up some gas early to share the lead with the favourite proved to be the right one.

“It was a tough run, the horse had to do a bit of work early,” Krogh conceded.

“There was always going to be a bit of pace on, but I know Matty Dale has his horses fit, so I knew I’d have a bit of power under me. He was tough at the finish.”

Krogh acknowledged Ready to Humble was always going to be the horse to beat.

“He’s no slouch, already qualified for the Big Dance,” Krogh noted of the Nick Olive galloper.

“It looked like today might be an easy one for him, but full credit to Mathew Dale and his training.

“I actually think my horse might be even better over 1800m.”

Krogh has only recently started getting some rides for Dale and was happy to land a feature early in the relationship.

For Krogh, his first time at Narrandera proved a memorable one.
