Mayor congratulates Wakka Wakka people on Native Title determination

South Burnett Regional Council Mayor Brett Otto congratulated the Wakka Wakka people on the historic occasion of the handing down of the Federal Court Native Title determination on country today.

“It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge the Wakka Wakka People as the traditional, and now, legally recognised native titleholders of approximately 9,393 square kilometres of land covered by this determination,” said Mayor Otto.

Mayor Otto paid tribute to Wakka Wakka family representatives and other First Nations elders and family members present.

“With the original Native Title Determination application lodged over 10 years ago in 2011, there has been an unwavering commitment from the Applicants, on behalf of all Wakka Wakka People to bring us to today.

“I acknowledge the dedication, determination and diligence in their efforts.

“South Burnett Regional Council has always had a great relationship and close friendship with the Wakka Wakka People.

“Council looks forward to working closely together to build stronger connections into the future.”
