Kye Mason of Cohuna represented Victoria at the 2022 Australian Track & Field Championships in Sydney last week. Competitors from across Australia and New Zealand converged on Sydney for the championships which were held from March 26 to April 3.
In the Open Mens 100 metres preliminary heat, Kye ran a personal best of 10.57 seconds, smashing his previous best time of 10.75 seconds, to qualify for the semi-final. He missed a spot in the final after placing 8th in the semi-final with a time of 10.72.
He also competed in the Open Mens 200 metres preliminary heat in a headwind, placing 5th with a time of 21.92.
Kye’s athletic career began at Cohuna Secondary College where he participated at regional and state level, taking out the 100-metre state title at the Secondary Track & Field Championships in Year 10 in 2018.
His commitment to athletics sees him training twice a week with Eaglehawk Athletic Club and competing every Saturday at various locations.
Considering Kye is relatively new on the athletics scene, he is happy to see where the sport will lead him. “I’m the most interested I’ve ever been in it,” Kye said. “I’d like to get into another Australian team and it’s a dream of mine to compete overseas.”
Kye is awaiting news of team placement in the regional Australia team for the Oceania Athletics Championships to be held in Mackay from June 7.
