For 19 years, the Lord Howe Island Classic race has just been growing stronger and stronger. It has a long and interesting history.
The snag, of course (forgive the pun), is getting there. Australia’s best barbie is held on Lord Howe Island, 420 nautical miles from Sydney.
To work up a hunger, most guests like to spend at least three days heading as close as possible to 060 degrees while making the best of the challenging breezes and currents. You’ll need to book a mooring through the LHI Board and bring your own grog, but all the food you can eat at the BBQ will be provided in exchange for a modest donation.
As always, all proceeds go to The Lord Howe Island Central School P & C Association.
This year’s BBQ was the 19th Classic Australian Barbecue held at Ned’s Beach, 5pm November 16th, 2021 There were 18 yachts participating in this year’s race and the weather made it a challenging voyage. Once on the Island however the yachties were rewarded with good weather.
The BBQ fundraising went very well, and everyone enjoyed delicious island fish, salads and desserts prepared by all the parents from the school. The total amount raised was $3750.00. This year trophy for the Classic Race was awarded to “Spindrift”.
Thank you very much to all who once again organised this fantastic event. It certainly is a highlight on the Island calendar. Your friendship and support for the Island and its school is greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you next year. Fair winds !
