Warren Blackwood MLA Bevan Eatts has accused the State Government of rushing the demersal fishing ban and causing a sharp rise in boat traffic on the South Coast.
He says that boat ramps are overcrowded, tourism infrastructure under strain and there is no support in sight.
Since the closure of key recreational and commercial fishing areas, there has been daily congestion at Windy Harbour, Walpole, Peaceful Bay and Denmark.
Locals report that this has occurred at ageing ramps and unsafe conditions for both fishers and families.
“This ban was pushed through with zero consultation, zero transition planning and complete disregard for the consequences,” Mr Eatts said.
“Now our small coastal towns are dealing with the fallout and the Government’s nowhere to be seen.”
Mr Eatts said this was what happened when stakeholders were ignored and regional voices bypassed.
The result was boat ramps buckling under pressure and regional tourism is paying the price.
Mr Eatts called on the State Government to consult with local governments affected to understand the implication of their rushed decision and to provide funding packages to assist with increased demand, maintenance and safety costs.
With the South West now absorbing displaced fishing activity, tourism operators had warned that poor access and infrastructure would damage the visitor experience and undermine the regional economy.
The Nationals WA were calling for an immediate pause on the permanent ban until an inquiry was conducted into WA fishing.
They were also calling for the release of all Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advice and modelling, emergency financial relief for impacted fishers and a consultative process with industry and communities.
