Analysis of ag industry pressures

The analysis of regional pressure on the agriculture workforce will look at key industry issues on the Downs.

The research will be done by AgriFutures and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

The Darling Downs and Toowoomba are among five key regions being looked at in the Strategic Analysis of Regional Workforce Pressures in Australian Agriculture.

As one of Australia’s most productive food and fibre regions, spanning grains, dairy, eggs, horticulture and major feedlot operations, it also faces strong competition for workers from rapidly expanding sectors such as health, manufacturing, construction and a growing AgTech hub.

AgriFutures Australia General Manager, Rural Futures, Simon Vincent said the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region is a major driver of Australia’s food and fibre production and its workforce challenges are both unique and highly instructive for national planning.

“Hearing directly from local employers, workers and community leaders will help us understand what’s working, where the pressure points are and what might better support the region’s diverse agricultural sectors,” he said.

The research aims to engage with stakeholders across the supply chains, communities and industries to best understand how to support the region and its food production going forward.

“We want to make sure every part of the workforce ecosystem, from training providers to employers and councils is part of the study,” Mr Vincent said.

The final report will be available mid 2026.
