After a tense wait, rain has finally fallen but farmers are hoping this is just the beginning of a solid wet season. Joyces Creek farmer Adam Sewell, who also featured on the [Tarrangower Times] cover a few months ago (see Friday 11 April), welcomed water in his dam but said more was needed.
Mr Sewell confessed to a few tears of relief when the rain persisted over the King’s Birthday Weekend, after weeks of false starts. “We’d had a number of promising weather forecasts in the past six to eight weeks and none of them gave anything,” he said.
The Bureau of Meterology’s Australian Rainfall Analysis map shows that central Victoria received between 15 and 50 millimetres of rain last week. Mr Sewell reports that it was suitably saturating: “We had 23mm with little-to-no runoff but a lovely soaking rain!” And while the temperature dropped and the local mood was cheerful over the wet long weekend, farmers need the showers to continue. Mr Sewell said: “Follow-up rain is needed now; the drought is far from over.”
