Twitchers get a good guide

Recent stories

A new pictorial guide to wetland birds of north-east Victoria is now available to help for people to get to know their local birdlife.

There are 52 species of wetland birds featured in the guide including 14 threatened species. The guide can be used to identify birds species across the North East’s diverse wetlands from alpine bogs to river flats.

Many of the species have been identified at the Corryong golf course over the past few years.

The online site eBird recorded 20 species of native and naturalised birds at the course from January 2020 to February 2023 and a survey conducted in November 2024 added another 46 to the list.

It includes the intriguingly named Restless Flycatcher, Rainbow Bee-eater, Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike, Hardhead and Noisy Friarbird.

The guide can be downloaded at www.environment.vic.gov.au/ or pick up a hard copy from the North East Catchment Management Authority in Wodonga or a DEECA office.
