Pole top fires cause power outages

Recent stories

According to Western Power’s website 845 customers are still without power in the upper coastal area of the Shire of Gingin after pole top fires throughout Perth and the Mid West and Wheatbelt regions.

About 3pm about 468 customers in Ledge Point were still affected, Lancelin (2) , Breton Bay (1), Nilgen (172) and Karakin (202).

By 1.26pm power had been restored to 1055 Lancelin customers.

But 82 customers in Wanerie were still to have power restored, 16 in Neergabby, four in Woodridge, 24 in Red Gully and Mindarra, 16 in Mindarra, Cullalla and Wannamal, two in Beermullah and two in Muchea.

Twenty-one customers in Carabooda and Nowergup were still without power, 153 in Clarkson, 119 in Landsdale and Darch, 89 in Wangara, 96 in Wanneroo and 11 in Gnangara.

About 12.30pm Western Power said weather conditions had impacted Western Power’s network with dozens of pole top fires affecting power supply to about 38,000 homes and businesses throughout Perth and the Mid West and Wheatbelt regions.

At 3.30pm Western Power said crews had made significant progress restoring power to customers following the weather-related outages, with more than 20,000 customers restored in the past few hours.

About 16,700 customers are still without power.

Western Power asset operations executive Zane Christmas said crews were working as quickly and as safely as possible.

Those who are affected are advised outages may last for an extended period.

This is due to the number of faults across the network and the time required to replace damaged assets, with pole replacements in some instances taking up to eight hours.

Western Power said it would continue to communicate with affected customers via SMS.

If people see a fallen power line or any other damage, they should stay 8m away and call Western Power on the emergency 24/7 number 13 13 51 so that emergency response crews could attend the hazard to make the area safe.
