Golden delicious!

Recent stories

The 2025 Maldon Twilight Dinner was a dazzling event under a clear, starry sky on Saturday 18 January. Attendees glistened in a variety of outfits along a golden spectrum of glitzy glam to gleefully garish. (There was a particular trend for sparkly top-hats).

Maldon local Valerie improvised with a square of fabric and a strategic brooch, which turned out beautifully. “I’m excited about dancing,” she said early in the evening. “We’re all here to support everyone.”

Mel, Tracye and Leo had travelled from Daylesford to set up along the footpath and enjoy the outdoor music; they booked accommodation at Maldon Caravan Park. They are regular riders on the Castlemaine-Maldon Rail Trail and are fans of this old town.

Ian Riley, columnist for the Tarrangower Times, cut a dashing figure with his artist wife Robyn Riley who was also out for a toe-tapping good time.

“We love the twilight dinner and we’ve lost sight of how many times we’ve been,” Ian said.

Multiple teams of volunteers worked together like a well-oiled machine, prepping and packing meals, setting and serving tables, checking tickets. Treats from multiple Maldon businesses ensured that folks were well-fed. The lineup of local musicians serenaded, rocked, rolled and crooned throughout the night.

At around 11pm, the street went quiet and the volunteers set to work again, rolling tables and stacking chairs. They were cheerful and worked without complaint, having enjoyed the entertainment themselves.

Chris and Germaine had travelled from the Macedon Ranges and were glowing with good cheer as they said their goodbyes.

“”Loved it!” Chris said, pointing out that it was their sixth  Twilight Dinner. “There’s nothing else like this,” Germaine pronounced.

The debriefing continued up and down Main Street throughout Sunday. Only the smallest sparkle of glitter remained to hint at the previous night’s revelry, demonstrating the fantastic effort by volunteer cleaners working in the dark, past midnight.

Sam from Eau Perfumery, who kept her new shop open during the dinner, didn’t hold back her praise, describing the event as: “Unbelievably, mindblowingly, spectacular.”

Ian Riley thought that the food was great and reported an enjoyable night with old and new friends. “Given that the event was under new management, we were interested to see how it would shape up.” Others praised the organisation of the night and manner of drinks service, while some said the music, while great for listening, did not inspire quite as much dancing as in previous years.

Overall, the word on the street was that this uniquely Maldon dinner was delicious and delightful.
